Tough times spawn 'good neighbor' mind-set

Allie Martin - OneNewsNow

An increase in Christian volunteering has been linked to the sour economy.

ChristianVolunteering.org is the largest Christian online volunteer matching website. The free service works similar to job-matching sites, except that it matches volunteers to various opportunities for volunteer work. During the past year, the site has seen a 300-percent increase in traffic. Andrew Sears is executive director of TechMission.org, which runs the website. He says the jump in traffic was surprising.

"I think the tendency...during hard times is that everyone tries to keep things for themselves," Sears observes. "But what we're finding is [that] the people who are looking for jobs...are going out and spending their time volunteering to help others who even may be more down and out than they are."
