Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood

Readers: Have you ever heard of this group? What do you think of them?

"Consuming Kids, a new film from The Media Education Foundation featuring CCFC staff and Steering Committee members, takes a powerful look at how corporations relentlessly target children and the impact of that marketing. It's also the perfect organizing tool to raise awareness about the commercialization of childhood. That's why CCFC members all over the country are hosting screenings of Consuming Kids in their communities."

In our home we've chosen not to have TV. Ever. We don't own one. We have instead puppets and blocks, educational games and screened netflix movies. The difference it makes is huge. There comes a time when the influence of parents and families is drowned out by the loudest, flashiest voices. Kids are young and impressionable and have no real basis for judging things. They just don't have the maturity. Give them a good wholesome atmosphere to be raised in, where conflicting messages can be kept to a minimum and you can in a large degree mitigate a lot of the damage evident in children steeped in the self centered ME of consumerism.
